Icehawks News from the Nest
June 26, 2013
I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. Even though it doesn’t seem like hockey weather, the board has been hard at work planning for the upcoming season. In the next few weeks, we will be working on setting the game schedules, planning our high school (midget) season, organizing our in house program and preparing for a fun and exciting fundraiser (more later).
I’ll get this topic out of the way first. By now, you have likely received a reminder to make your next installment payment for the 2013-14 tuition. Please log in to your account to make this payment at your convenience. So far, the online payment system has been working well. It almost makes it enjoyable to pay a bill...well, maybe not.
Summer 4 on 4 Hockey
Northwestern continues to have a good presence at Danbury Ice Arena’s 4 on 4 summer league. In the summer, Sunday is “4 on 4 Day” in Danbury. Even if you haven’t signed up for the full season, which runs to the middle of August, the rink is accepting walk up payments of $20. So, if you want your child to get some ice time in a fun, short ice game, bring them down to Danbury on Sundays. The regular schedule is as follows: Mites 10am; Squirts 11:20am; Peewees 12:40pm; Bantams 1pm; High School 2:20pm. If there are any variations to this schedule, I will post it to the Northwestern Hockey web site.
Northwestern Hockey is working with Pawling-Beekman Roller Hockey to form a fun, low-key summer roller hockey league. The outdoor rink is located on Dodge Road in Pawling, NY and is currently undergoing a major resurfacing. This work is expected to be completed by July 15. Once this work is complete, a league will be formed for all age levels (mites through high school). The cost is a very modest $75 and includes a 12 game schedule running through the end of August (and a free jersey). Games are expected to be played on weeknight evenings with weekends reserved for make up games.
There is also an equally fun learn to skate program that is run on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. This is great way for any child to learn how to skate at a very low cost ($60).
For those already playing ice hockey, the equipment investment is quite small. A pair of roller blades is really the only specialized equipment that is needed. Helmet, gloves, elbow pads, shin pads, and pants all come from your child’s ice hockey bag.

Village Fair Days
The board has decided to have a presence at New Milford’s Village Fair Days later in July (7/26 and 7/27). We are waiting on the final word that our booth is reserved. If so, we will be asking for volunteers to help take a shift in the booth to tell visitors about Northwestern Hockey. More details to come.
Labor Day Fundraiser
Reserve Sunday September 1 in your calendars for our first annual Skate-a-Thon. More details to follow!
